Many of us have been urged to stay home for the foreseeable future as it has been determined that this is the best way to slow down or halt the spread of this virus.

This virus has caused a lot of shifts and changes in our normal schedules and daily plans and could possibly be quite disruptive to our “normal way” of managing our energy throughout the day.

But have you ever considered this could actually work to our benefit as it relates to our personal and familial relationships?

  • That it could indeed have a positive effect on our lives?
  • Is it possible that this “disruption” could be helpful not only to ending COVID-19 but it could possibly close the gap in communication and put an end to the disconnection that's been ensuing within our families and intimate relationships?
  • Wouldn’t THAT be a blessing!?!?!

What if after we took the time to really look at our lives while we are “quarantined,” we begin to realize that…

  • We've been too occupied by work and chores and not enough on ourselves?
  • We’ve been working so hard in keeping food on the table that we have stopped feeding the hearts of our loved ones?
  • We've been so focused on our work lives to have secured a future for ourselves and our children has led to an unintentional strain and pressure on our connections with those very same people?

And if you happen to have children, outside of the general conversations you have every day with them, when was the last time you...

Actually made time for a heart-to-heart talk?

  • Took time to get to know your child better?
  • To learn what makes them happy or sad?
  • Inquired about what they were “in to” these days?
  • Learned something new about them?
  • Made plans as a family for future financial or recreational events?
  • Explored your deepest thoughts and feelings?
  • Enjoyed a meal with the entire family?

If you've never done this before, they will most likely be a bit weirded out by it, to begin with, but stick with it. Don't force it, just let them know your intention of re-connecting with them and leave the door open for them.

Here area few more things to consider that will help improve your family relationships…

  • Cook a healthy and delicious meal without having to “gobble up” your food because you need to rush out the door!
  • Find ways to enjoy each other's company at home.
  • Have intimate conversations with your significant other and kids.
  • Take time to call those friends you've been putting off or haven’t talked to in a while or maybe even your relatives that you haven't connected with for a long time.

Let’s make something good out of these changing times. Who knows, after this is all over, we may not only emerge COVID-FREE but also with healthier and happier interpersonal relationships as well.

Maybe it’s time we all slowed down, to press that reset button and to RECONNECT to what is most important to us.

With all my love,

Coach Anita Charlot
